How to care for it and make it last
Even a towbar’s massive steel cannot withstand wear,
tear and corrosion forever: Since between a ballhead and
the mouth of the drawbar metal will constantly rub on metal,
even the most protective paint will be gone one day. But
Rameder, with www.rameder.nl Europe’s leading provider of towing
equipment for cars, has some tips to make your towbar last a whole car’s life.
To begin with, there is rarely any rust collecting on the top of
the ballhead if the towbar is used frequently. After all, the metal
is then being polished, as it were... But since the paint also suffers,
when lying idle you should protect the ballhead with the cover you got
and grease it. However, do NOT leave it greased if you use anti-roll
systems or with racks for bikes or skis in particular, in which cases
the grease has to be carefully removed to connect the ballhead safely.
If it is rusty, though, first clean it with fine-grained sandpaper to
avoid noise when driving. In case of removable models or swivel-type
systems, please grease all movable parts and joints.
You can never avoid at least some wear and tear, though. In order to
observe the statutory minimum dimensions, do therefore regularly
measure the ballhead, and if its diameter is less than 49mm, replace it.
